ASCRS’21 was really the first big ophthalmology conference that went in person. Our very own Drs. Gagan Kalra and Mike Zein attended the meeting in Las Vegas earlier this year. It was so exciting to see colleagues, leaders, industry, and friends all be together in one room, a giant one at that. Mandalay Bay Resorts hosted the meeting at the Convention center and no words can do justice or capture the feeling you get when you step into the grand exhibit hall! (But we tried!!)
Drs. Kalra and Zein were able to interview some trailblazers in the field who have been pushing the field forward - be it refractive cataract surgery, modern MIGS procedures for glaucoma care, or digital health endeavors such as telemedicine. Dr. Dagny Zhu is a Harvard-educated, board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cornea, cataract, and laser refractive surgery. Dr. Zhu then returned to Southern California to complete her ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute/University of Southern California (USC) + Los Angeles County Medical Center, where she served a predominantly Latino community and cared for the sickest patients at one of the largest public hospitals in the country. Described as a “gifted surgeon” by her mentors, Dr. Zhu elected to complete fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the world.

Dr. Steven R. Sarkisian, Jr., M.D. is the founder and CEO of Oklahoma Eye Surgeons, PLLC. He specializes in premium cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery, with a special interest in helping his patients be glasses-free and performing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). He implants premium lenses with cataract surgery and was the first in Oklahoma to implant the PanOptix trifocal lens. This is the newest premium lens, and now for the first time, we can treat distance, intermediate, and near vision, as well as astigmatism, all at the same time. He was also the first surgeon in Oklahoma to perform the iStent, iStent Inject, the Xen Gel Stent, and canaloplasty. He was the first in the U.S. to use the OMNI device and the first in the world to use the TRAB360 and VISCO360 surgical systems, the predicate devices to the OMNI.

Dr. Brian Shafer is a cataract, refractive, cornea, and glaucoma surgeon serving patients in the Chester County and Main Line area. He previously was a cornea and refractive surgery fellow at Vance Thompson Vision.
Standing on the shoulders of giants, being inquisitive, challenging dogmas, and looking for better ways to do well by your patients seemed to be recurring themes in our conversations with the experts. Young ophthalmologists, trainees, aspiring ophthalmologists, and researchers alike can draw from the learnings of the wisdom of these leaders in the field.
