Dr. José-Alain Sahel is a distinguished ophthalmologist and world-renowned scientist. He is the chairman of the department of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Eye Center, Pittsburgh, PA. He is also the director of UPMC Eye Center and Eye and Ear Foundation. He is a pioneer in the field of artificial retina and vision restorative therapies such as optogenetics. His trailblazing work in the field, especially with retinal and subretinal implants, has had a tremendous impact on patients' lives, restoring usable vision to the blind. And recently his work with optogenetics got published in Nature Medicine, which is one of the highest impact factor journals in all of medicine.
